Cómpeta — Canillas de Albaida
A short walk along a goat track, through farmland to the next village.
White-washed, six-hundred-and-thirty-eight metres up, working all year, and the kind of place you spend a weekend, and end up returning to for years.
A pace that adjusts itself.
Cómpeta sits high up in the Sierra de Almijara — a pueblo blanco, an hour from Málaga airport and thirty minutes from the coast, with views across the Axarquía and the Mediterranean.
The village welcomes travellers to life in Cómpeta. The bakery opens at seven. The butcher at eight. From easter the ice cream shop is open early until late.
One minute walk from the front door, the plaza is centred on the eighteenth-century church of La Asunción and a cluster of bars whose tables fill before midday and are still occupied past midnight. On Saturdays the market sets in plaza de la Axarquia — locally grown fruits, nuts and vegetables; locally produced wine, oil, textiles, and ceramics.
With a national park on the north and east sides and more villages to the south and west, there are walks for all abilities.

A short walk along a goat track, through farmland to the next village.

A longer climb to the top of the mountain and back down to Cómpeta. Spectacular views. Boots advised.

A long walk on some historic trading routes that crossed the Alpujarra. Witness the full beauty of the mountains.
Wildflowers on the slopes, cool nights, a perfect time for exploring.
Long evenings, the rooftops in full swing, the pool earning its salt.
Olive harvest, walking weather, the village's quietest spell.
Open fires in the bars, almond blossom in February, occasional snow on La Maroma.
The village runs to its own calendar of fiestas, processions, and seasonal celebrations — Cabalgata de Reyes, Semana Santa, Cruces de Mayo, the Feria, La Noche del Vino on the 15th of August, an arts festival in September. Most are annual; some shift with the lunar calendar. Time your stay around one if you can.
