The annual celebration of life in Cómpeta.

A Feria is the annual fair every Andalusian village throws — and Cómpeta's is the week the whole place waits all year for. Food and dance tents (called casetas) line the edge of the village, a small funfair sets up beside them, and the whole rhythm of the place tilts towards music and conversation that runs late into the night.

It's not a polished tourist event. It's the village's own celebration, run by and for the people who live here. Visitors are welcome — but the spirit of the thing is local.

Cómpeta's Feria runs over four or five days in late July, leading into the patron-saint celebrations on the 25th. Exact dates shift by a few days each year and are usually announced by the town hall a couple of months in advance. Anthony or Ian will know the dates by spring; ask when you book.

The August 15th Noche del Vino — the village's biggest single night — is a separate festival. Different evening, different vibe, equally worth being here for.

Eat from the casetas. Watch the kids' parade through the square. Stay for the late music — flamenco, sevillanas, sometimes a brass band — and the dancing that follows. Most of it is free; the food is cheap and good.

Bring small change for the funfair if you have children with you. Wear something you don't mind getting wine on. The streets close to traffic from late afternoon, so if you've parked in the village, expect to leave the car where it is until morning.

Rooms during Feria week fill three to six months ahead. If you want to be here for it, book early. Late check-in is the rule rather than the exception — the village goes to bed slowly that week, and so do we.
